Get Along (with Someone)

Meaning: To have a satisfactory relationship (mối quan hệ hòa thuận)

Example: I've always gotten along with Amanda—I think she's very nice.

Get Carried Away

Meaning: Become overly enthusiastic (trở nên hăng say)

Example: She started getting carried away during her story, frantically describing every detail of what happened.

Get in(to) Shape

Meaning: Undertake a program of physical conditioning; exercise regularly (lấy lại dáng)

Example: Boy, I really need to get into shape. Ten years working behind a desk has given me quite a belly!

Get One’s Hands Dirty

Meaning: To do the unpleasant parts of a job (làm việc sai trái, không mong muốn)

Example: Uncle Pete has been avoiding us ever since we discovered that he gets his hands dirty working for the mob.

Get Someone’s Goat

Get the picture

Meaning: To begin to understand (hiểu vấn đề)

Example: I know it's annoying to make all these copies, but the boss specifically asked me to have you do it—get the picture?

Example: I think it will be easier to become comfortable driving now that I've gotten the ball rolling with driving lessons.

Get the Runaround

Meaning: Be given an unclear or evasive answer to a question (lời giải thích không thỏa đáng)

Example: I always get the runaround when I call the telephone company to explain all these extra charges.

Get the Sack = Be Sacked

Meaning: To be fired (bị sa thải)

Example: I just got the sack, and so did 20 other people. I have three hours pack up my things and leave the office.

Example: The police got wind of the illegal drug deal.

Go Along (With)

Meaning: Agree to something, often provisionally (đồng thuận)

Example: I'm sorry, but I can't go along with this. It's wrong.

Go Belly Up

Meaning: To go bankrupt (phá sản)

Example: The merger deal between the two companies went belly-up when it came to light that one of the CEOs had been dodging tax obligations for several years.

Go Down in Flames

Meaning: Fail in a spectacular way (thất bại)

Example: Despite all the media hype, the major summer blockbuster went down in flames—hardly anyone went to see it while it was in theaters.

Go Mental/ Nuclear/ Nuts/ Bananas/ Ape/ Ballistic

Meaning: To suddenly become extremely angry (giận dữ)

Example: My parents went totally ape when they found out I'd wrecked the car!

Go Off Half-Cocked

Meaning: To say or something prematurely, with a negative effect (làm gì đó gây hậu quả xấu khi giận dữ)

Example: I'll admit that I went off at half-cock when I sent that angry email before finding out what really happened.

Go the Extra Mile

Meaning: Put forth greater-than-expected effort (làm tốt hơn mong đợi)

Example: I have to say, our lawyer really went the extra mile in making sure every aspect of our case was watertight.

Go Under the Knife

Meaning: Undergo surgery (phẫu thuật)

Example: My dad is going under the knife on Thursday to try and clear the blockage in his heart.

Go Viral

Meaning: Begin To spread rapidly on the Internet (phổ biến trên truyền thông)

Example: I can't believe that video of our puppy lounging on a pool float went viral!

Go with the Flow

Meaning: To accept the way things naturally seem to be going (thuận theo tự nhiên)

Example: We always do things your way—can't you just go with the flow for once?

Green as Grass

Meaning: Lacking training, naive; often said of young people in new jobs (thiếu kinh nghiệm, còn non)

Example: This is a very important job, so I can't understand why they hired someone who's as green as grass.

Grind One’s Teeth

Meaning: Be very annoyed or angry about something without being able to say anything about it (tức giận về gì nhưng không thể nói ra)

Example: Jason spent half the meeting claiming credit for work that I did. I was sitting there grinding my teeth, but with the chairman there I couldn’t tell him off.

Guilty Pleasure

Meaning: Enjoying something which is not generally held in high regard, while at the same time feeling a bit guilty about it, is called a guilty pleasure. (hành động không được đánh giá cao - niềm vui tội lỗi)

Example: I know these gossip magazines are trashy, but reading them on my commute home is my guilty pleasure!

Guinea Pig

Meaning: A test subject, a person who is used as a test to see if something will work (vật thí nghiệm - chuột bạch)

Example: Jane used her husband as a guinea pig to try her new baked chicken recipe.

Give and Take

Meaning: Negotiations, the process of compromise (thỏa thuận)

Example: You won't get far in this business if you aren't willing to allow a little give-and-take with your competitors.

Give Lip Service to

Meaning: Talk about supporting something without taking any concrete action (nói về kế hoạch nhưng không hành động)

Example: The local council members give lip service each year to a renewed plan to tackle homelessness, but no one ever expects them to follow through.

Give Someone a Piece of Your Mind

Meaning: Angrily tell someone what you think (nói ai đó những điều bạn nghĩ)

Example: I had to give Sarah a piece of my mind after she left my car a mess for the third time this week.

Give Someone the Cold Shoulder

Meaning: To intentionally appear disinterested toward one; to snub (mặc kệ, thái độ thù địch)

Example: She thinks you started that rumor about her—that's why she's been giving you the cold shoulder all day.

Give us the green light

Meaning: Approve something; allow something to proceed (chấp thuận)

Example: We're just waiting our manager to give us the green light before we release the latest software update.
