Keep (something) at bay
Meaning: to control something and prevent it from causing you problems (kiểm soát để tránh gây rắc rối)
Example: She fought to keep her unhappiness at bay.
Keep (one's)/an eye on (someone or something)
Meaning: To keep an eye on something or someone is to watch it periodically, to keep it under surveillance (để mắt tới)
Example: Sure, I can keep an eye on the baby while you go to the store.
Meaning: Don’t tell anyone; don’t reveal this secret (hãy giữ bí mật)
Example: I have a really hot stock tip for you. I can tell you now, but keep it under your hat.
Meaning: Avoid close interaction or cooperation (giữ khoảng cách, tránh tiếp xúc)
Example: John always keeps his friends at arm's length, so that no one gets close enough to hurt his feelings.
Meaning: Avoid trouble or situations that compromise one’e honesty (hành xử cân nhắc để tránh rắc rối)
Example: You better keep your nose clean, kid, or you're going to run into trouble you can't handle.
Meaning: To work hard and/or diligently on something (làm việc chăm chỉ)
Example: I'm so impressed by your grades, honey—you really kept your nose to the grindstone this year, and it paid off!
Meaning: Approach a problem with excessive measures (tiếp cận vấn đề với một giải pháp quá mạnh)
Example: Doctors often prescribe antibiotics even for minor ailments. They’re trying to kill a fly with an elephant gun.
Meaning: Solve two problems with one move (giống câu: một mũi tên giết 2 con nhạn)
Example: I might as well kill two birds with one stone and drop off my tax forms while I'm at the mall for the computer part I need.
Meaning: To destroy a source of ongoing profits or benefits (phá hủy nguồn lợi ích tốt)
Example: Firing the programmer who created your most successful app is like killing the goose that lays the golden egg.
Meaning: At the top of one’s field; the most influential person in a given field or area (người giỏi nhất, ảnh ởưởng nhất của một lĩnh vực nào)
Example: After years of slowly moving up the ranks, Joe finally became king of the hill in his office.
Meaning: Make peace after an argument (làm hòa sau khi cãi nhau)
Example: I'm glad you two finally kissed and made up. It was awkward with you fighting.
Meaning: Friends and Family (bạn bè và gia đình)
Example: We are gathered here, with kith and kin, to celebrate this great union.
Meaning: To be very familiar with something, especially an area (biết rõ như lòng bàn tay)
Example: I've read this book so many times, I know it like the back of my hand.
