· Idiom

Idiom là những câu/cụm từ được người bản xứ thường xuyên sử dụng trong giao tiếp hằng ngày. Nếu bạn đang có ý định thi IELTS hoặc muốn nâng cao khả năng giao tiếp bằng tiếng Anh thì nhất định không thể bỏ qua bài viết này. "Sự có mặt" của idiom trong bài giao tiếp (IELTS speaking) là một trong những tiêu chí giúp bạn đạt điểm cao. Dưới đây là danh sách những Idioms bắt đầu bằng chữ "Q". Quarter Past

Meaning: Fifteen minutes after the hour (Quarter past eight: 8 giờ 15 phút)

Example: A: "What time does the movie start?" B: "Not until a quarter past eight, so we've got plenty of time!"

Quarter To/Of

Meaning: Fifteen minutes before the hour (Quarter to eight: 8 giờ kém 15 phút)

Example: It is now (a) quarter to four. (4 giờ kém 15)

Quarrel with bread and butter

Meaning: If a sub-ordinate in an organisation is quarrelsome or if he is not patient enough to bear the reprimand he deserves, gets angry and retorts or provokes the higher-up, the top man dismisses him from the job (một người mất bình tĩnh mà cãi nhau với sếp bị đuổi việc)

Example: He quarrelled with bread and butter (manager or the top man) and lost his job.

Queen bee

Meaning: The queen bee is a woman who holds the most important position in a place (người phụ nữ ở vị trí quan trọng nhất)

Example: You will need to get permission from the queen bee before we can move forward with that idea.

Queen of hearts

Meaning: A woman who is pre-eminent in her area (người phụ nữ nổi bật trong lĩnh vực của mình)

Example: She proved she is the real queen of hearts after all.

Question of time

Meaning: If something's a question of time, it's certain to happen, though we don't know exactly when (chắc chắn sẽ xảy ra, không biết chính xác khi nào)

Example: With your reckless spending behavior, it's just a question of time before you go broke.

Quick as a Flash

Meaning: If something happens quick as a flash, it happens very fast indeed (rất nhanh)

Example: Did you see that martial arts master? His threw those kicks as quick as a flash!

Quick and Dirty

Meaning: Approximate, hastily done (làm việc nhanh chóng như không tốt)

Example: It's a bit quick and dirty, but the strap should hold the barrier shut until we can bring it to the mechanics.

Quick Buck

Meaning: If you make some money easily, you make a quick buck (tiền dễ kiếm)

Example: The people hawking T-shirts commemorating the tragedy are just looking to make a quick buck.

Quick Fix

Meaning: A quick fix is an easy solution, especially one that will not last (giải pháp tạm thời)

Example: There is no quick fix for your financial problems. You must learn to budget your money and gradually cut down on your expenses.

Quick on the trigger

Meaning: Someone who is quick on the trigger acts or responds quickly (người ứng phó nhanh/ lẹ tay)

Example: You have to be quick on the trigger if you want to get ahead in the world of business.

Quick and the dead

Meaning: Those alive and dead alike (những người còn sống và đã chết)

Example: Today we pay our respects as a nation for the quick and the dead who have fought, and continue to fight, for our freedom and safety.

Quid pro quo

Meaning: Something given in return for a item of equivalent value - like tit for tat. (giống câu có qua có lại)

Example: You wash my car, and I'll drop off your dry cleaning—quid pro quo.

Quiet before the storm

Meaning: When you know that something is about to go horribly wrong, but hasn't just yet, then you are in the quiet before the storm. (trước cơn bão, bầu trời thường im ắng)

Example: Oh, this is the quiet before the storm—the dinner rush will turn this place into a mad house.

Quitters never win; winners never quit

Meaning: If you quit you will never get what you want, but if you keep trying you will find a way to get what you want. (người bỏ cuộc sẽ không có gì, người không bỏ cuộc sẽ chiến thắng - dùng để khuyên người khác đừng bao giờ bỏ cuộc)
