call it a day
Meaning: Decide that one has worked enough on something for the day (xong việc hôm nay)
Example: When we still couldn't find the source of the discrepancy, we decided to call it a day and revisit it tomorrow.
call it a night
Meaning: End an evening’s activities and go home (xong việc tối, về nhà)
Example: I'm too tired to keep looking at these numbers, so let's call it a night.
castle in the air
Meaning: An impractical plan (mơ mộng, không thực tế)
Example: You need sound financial advice and a strong plan if you're going to start your own business—don't just build castles in the air.
Meaning: A fight between two women (cuộc chiến những người phụ nữ)
Example: It was a wild night at the bar last night. A lot of people got drunk, and they were thrown out when they started arguing and a cat fight broke out.
catch someone's eye
Meaning: Attract someone’s attention (thu hút sự chú ý của ai đó)
Example: Your store needs a bold sign that will catch the eye of anyone walking down the street.
Meaning: Apprehended while committing a crime (bắt gặp phạm tội)
Example: He tried to deny that he had stolen the money, but he was caught red-handed by security cameras.
close, but no cigar
Meaning: You are very close but not quite correct (gần đúng nhưng không chính xác)
Example: You all had some very good guesses—close but no cigar.
cool as a cucumber
Meaning: Calm and composed even in difficult or frustrating situations; self-possessed (bình tĩnh)
Example: I was petrified to take the stage, but Alice was as cool as a cucumber.
chuck a wobbly
Meaning: To act in an emotional way (thể hiện thái độ ra mặt)
Example: I know you’re upset. But don’t chuck a wobbly in your meeting with the boss; he won’t like it.
call in sick
Meaning: to telephone one’s office or workplace to say you can’t come in because you are sick (cáo ốm)
Example: She’s called in sick again today. I think she must be pregnant
call it quits
Meaning: to stop doing something (dừng)
Example: I tried and tried to learn speak French but now I’m calling it quits
Meaning: An event that almost happened/ A difficult decision or a result that’s hard to determine (xém xảy ra/ suýt soát).
Example: She had several close calls before she had the accident so she should’ve been more careful.
cat/ cat's got someone's tongue
Meaning: a situation where someone is not speaking or is having difficulty trying to say something (khó nói).
Example: I wanted to say something at the meeting but the cat got my tongue!
cat and mouse
Meaning: a series of planned actions involving pursuit, captures and repeated escapes (mèo vờn chuột, không hồi kết).
Example: I feel like this candidate is playing cat and mouse with us. Do you think she has another job offer or maybe she's interviewing with a lot of other companies?
cut it fine
Meaning: To do something at the last moment (chờ đến phút cuối mới làm)
Example: Your train leaves in twenty minutes and you’re still here! You’re cutting it a bit fine, aren’t you?
crash a party
Meaning: To attend a party without being invited (không mời mà tới)
Example: Come on, let's go crash the neighbors' party—I'm sure they won't mind us showing up.
cry over spilled milk
Meaning: to be upset, worried or unhappy about something that cannot be changed (lo lắng, buồn bã vì chuyện đã qua)
Example: I know you're upset the airline lost our luggage but let's enjoy this holiday anyway. What's the use of crying over spilled milk?
