I. Cách dùng "preference"
1. "preference" vừa là danh từ đếm được, không đếm được

2. Cách dùng
2.1. ( preference for something ) sở thích; sự thích hơn
the fact that you like something or someone more than another thing or person
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:
- There is milk and cream - do you have a preference ? (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Có sữa và kem - anh có thích thứ nào không?)
- it's entirely a matter of preference (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: đó hoàn toàn là vấn đề sở thích)
- what are your preferences ? (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: những sở thích của anh là gì?)
2.2. ( preference to / towards somebody ) sự thiên vị; sự ưu tiên
an advantage that is given to a person or a group of people
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:
- employees who have worked here for many years will be given preference over newcomers (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: những người đã làm ở đây nhiều năm sẽ được ưu đãi hơn người mới đến làm)
- she tried not to show preference in her treatment of the children in her care (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: cô ấy cố không để lộ sự thiên vị trong việc đối xử với bọn trẻ do cô ấy trông nom)
2.3. in preference to somebody /something: hơn là ai/cái gì
=If you choose one thing in preference to another thing, you choose it because you like or want it more than the other thing

- he chose to learn English in preference to Japanese (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: anh ta chọn học tiếng Anh hơn là học tiếng Nhật)
- He studied chemistry in preference to physics at university.
II. Word form "prefer"
1. preferred
2. preferability
3. preferable (adj):
(không đi với more ) ( preferable to something / doing something ) được thích hơn cái gì; thích hợp hơn
= better or more suitable

- cold food would be preferable in this heat (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: với cái nóng này thì thức ăn lạnh thích hợp hơn)
- he finds country life preferable to living in the city (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: anh ta nhận ra rằng sống ở nông thôn hay hơn là sống ở thành thị)
- Surely a diplomatic solution is preferable to war.
4. preferably (adv) nếu có thể, ưa thích hơn là, tốt nhất là
= if possible

- Water the plants twice a week, preferably in the morning.
- Come to my house tomorrow, preferably in the evening. (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Mai nhớ đến nhà tôi, tốt nhất là buổi tối)
