Ugly Duckling
Meaning: A person or thing once considered unattractive or unlikely to succeed that becomes beautiful or successful in time. (vật/ người không có ngoại hình/ khả năng thành công)
Example: I thought that fledgling company would dissolve in months. No one foresaw that it was just an ugly duckling and would have great success.
Under (Below) the Radar
Meaning: In a position in which someone or something will remain unnoticed or undetected. (vị trí không ai chú ý)
Example: With so many different amendments to the bill being made, some appropriations slipped under the radar.
Under the Impression
Meaning: Holding the assumption or belief (that something is true) (tưởng rằng)
Example: Oh, sorry, I was under the impression that you two were a couple. My mistake.
Under the Table
Meaning: Secretly (often because what is being done is illegal) (bí mật thường là bất hợp pháp)
Example: Because I get paid under the table, no taxes come out of my paycheck.
Under the Weather
Meaning: Mildly ill (bệnh)
Example: Yeah, I was under the weather last week, but I'm feeling much better now.
Under Wraps
Meaning: Secret (giữ bí mật)
Example: Keep this under wraps for now, but Greg is definitely the one getting the promotion.
University of Life
Meaning: The informal education one receives by learning from one's experiences, both good and bad, rather than a formal educational institution. (kinh nghiệm học được trong cuộc sống - giống trường đời)
Example: My uncle might not have made it past grade school, but he's learned more from the university of life than most of our professors.
Until the Cows Come Home/ Until You're Blue
in the Face
Meaning: For a very long, indefinite amount of time; forever (một thời gian dài, mãi mãi)
Example: My wife was talking on the phone with her sister until the cows came home last night!
Meaning: Nearly overwhelmed (quá tải việc)
Example: I’m up to my neck in work this week. Let’s get together next Wednesday.
Up to Scratch/ Snuff
Meaning: As good as what was expected, required, or demanded; satisfactory or adequate (tốt như những gì đã dự tính)
Example: How much money do you think it will take to bring my car up to scratch?
Meaning: To use one's own intelligence and intellectual ability; to think logically and rationally. sử dụng trí thông minh của ai)
Example: Come on, Dean, I know you can figure this out on your own. Use your head for a change!
