Dance with the death/Devil
Meaning: Knowingly do something immoral (làm gì nguy hiểm/ không đúng đắn)
Example: I think you'll be dancing with death if you attempt that motorcycle jump.
Deep Pockets
Meaning: The new owner has deep pockets, so fans are hoping the football team will improve next year with new players (có nhiều tiền)
Example: Luckily, we have an investor who is the deep pockets of our business and can fund all of this construction work.
Deliver the Goods
Meaning: Provide what is expected (cung cấp đúng thứ cần)
Example: He's the best graphic designer we have, so I'm confident that he can deliver the goods for this ad campaign.
Dirty Look
Meaning: A facial manner that signifies disapproval (cái nhìn không vui vẻ)
Example: Do you know why Gina keeps giving me dirty looks? Is she mad at me?
Meaning: Don’t be deceived by looks; don’t rely on looks when judging someone or something (đừng đánh giá qua vẻ bề ngoài)
Example: I know she's a little frumpy, but don't judge a book by its cover, man!
Meaning: Don’t worry about minor things (đừng lo lắng về điều nhỏ nhặt)
Example: Oh, honey, you just ripped your stockings a little. You'll be fine—don't cry over spilled milk.
Meaning: Something that can be helpful or harmful; something beneficial that also has a downside (con dao 2 lưỡi)
Example: Intelligence is a double-edged sword. Things may come easy to you, but people will always expect more.
Meaning: Depressed, sad (buồn bã)
Example: Rob has been down in the dumps ever since Gloria broke up with him.
Down the Road
Meaning: In the future (in your lifetime) (tương lai)
Example: If you don't do your homework now, it'll be a problem down the road when you don't know the material for the exam.
Meaning: To do something reluctantly and slowly (chậm chạm)
Example: We can't be late for the dentist, so quit dragging your feet and get in the car!
Draw a Line (in the Sand)
Meaning: Issue an ultimatum; specify an absolute limit in a conflict (ranh giới cuộc xung đột)
Example: I don't mind my roommate being a bit messy, but leaving dirty dishes for me to clean up is where I draw a line in the sand!
Dressed to the Nines
Meaning: Someone is wearing very smart or glamorous clothes (ăn mặc đẹp đẽ)
Example: I have to be dressed to the nines at this gala tonight—a lot of important people will be there.
Meaning 1: To arrange a transaction so that it benefits oneself (thỏa thuận có lợi cho một bên)
Example: All right, sir, you drive a hard bargain. I'll sell you this car for $12,450. You drive a hard bargain, Jane, but I'll sign the contract.
Meaning 2: To negotiate effectively (một người trả giá giỏi)
Example: Sal is known to drive a hard bargain, so I doubt you'll get that car for the price you want.
Drop (someone) a line
Meaning: To write a letter or send an email (gửi tin nhắn)
Example: I'll drop you a line once I get settled in at school.
